The 21st Chinese Lexical Semantics Workshop

President Maureen Sabine: HKAH Fellow and Executive Committee member, Meichun Liu, sent the HKAH details of the successful Chinese Lexical Semantics Workshop, which she organized as Head of Linguistics and Translation at the City University of Hong Kong and held online in May.
Key speakers included past Academy President, Chu-Ren Huang. The presentations were broadcast to a large real-time audience, demonstrating the creative and resilient ways in which Fellows have risen to the challenges caused by COVID-19.

CLSW2020 – We go online; we go big!
On 28-30 May 2020, the 21st Chinese Lexical Semantics Workshop (CLSW2020) was held at the City University of Hong Kong. The conference was hosted by the Department of Linguistics and Translation, City University of Hong Kong. The theme of the conference was "Lexical Semantics”, “Artificial Intelligence”, and “Cognitive Science". In response to the epidemic situation, CLSW2020 was held in the form of Zoom Webinar online seminars, and was broadcast live on the YouTube and Douyu platforms in real-time.
We invited Prof. Alex JEN, Provost of the City University of Hong Kong and Prof. Richard M. Walker, Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences of the City University of Hong Kong to attend the Opening Ceremony. The two professors gave congratulations on the successful hosting of CLSW2020 and introduced the establishment of the City University of Hong Kong and the achievements of School of Humanities and Social Sciences to date.
In addition, we also invited three key founders of CLSW, Prof. Chu-Ren HUANG, Prof. Ka Yin Benjamin T’SOU and Prof. Chin-Chuan CHENG to give speeches. Prof. HUANG particularly explained the significance of this meeting; Prof. Ka Yin Benjamin T’SOU detailed the historical process of CLSW; Prof. CHENG shared the situation of CLSW under the SARS epidemic in 2003.
Finally, Prof. Meichun LIU, the head of the Department of Linguistics and Translation, City University of Hong Kong, and the chair of CLSW2020 Organizing Committee, made a summary report.She introduced the unique theme and features of the conference, special arrangement of 6 keynote speeches and 4 panel sessions, and paper submission and acceptance rate. At the end, she thanked all the “helping hands” that made the conference possible, including the co-organizers, CLSW2020 Steering Committee and Organizing Committee members, the LT Department’s faculty and staff, PhD students, tech support team, and volunteers, who all worked hard in the planning, preparation, and delivery of the conference.
CLSW2020, the online real-time conference on Zoom Webinar, proved to be a huge success with loud applauses! Let us look forward to the CLSW2021 at Nanjing!
